Ottawa’s business community is diverse, with opportunities for entrepreneurs from various industries to meet, share insights, and collaborate. The Ottawa entrepreneurial ecosystem has grown exponentially over the years, in particular with the growth of high tech startups in the Kanata Business Park, and there are now many networking events catering specifically to small business owners, startups, and entrepreneurs.

Networking in Ottawa typically involves a mix of formal and informal events, including:

  • Speed networking: Fast-paced and efficient, these events allow entrepreneurs to quickly meet multiple potential clients, collaborators, or investors.
  • Industry-specific networking events: Focused gatherings where entrepreneurs can discuss sector-specific challenges and opportunities, share knowledge, and create partnerships.
  • Business workshops and panels: In-depth events that not only provide networking but also offer educational resources, featuring expert speakers who share insights on growth strategies, funding, and marketing.
  • Casual networking meetups: Laid-back events that allow entrepreneurs to exchange ideas over coffee or lunch, perfect for building more personal relationships. Plus there are larger more social networking events like eSAX that encourage a collaborative mind frame.

The Ottawa networking scene offers a variety of opportunities to connect with investors, industry leaders, and like-minded entrepreneurs, but finding the right networking platform can be challenging. This is where eSAX shines! If you’re an entrepreneur, startup founder, or small business owner looking to attend events to build a business, here is why networking are vital for entrepreneurs:

  • Build Relationships with Potential Clients
Networking opens doors to new clients, customers, and business partners. When you actively network, you gain access to opportunities you wouldn’t find through traditional marketing methods. Whether you’re a startup in Ottawa or an established small business, creating lasting relationships is key to generating leads and boosting sales.
  • Access to Funding and Investment
If you’re looking to scale your Ottawa startup or launch your small business, networking with investors, venture capitalists, and fellow entrepreneurs could lead to the capital you need. eSAX events are often attended by individuals looking to invest in local businesses, giving you direct access to potential funding opportunities.

One of the greatest benefits of networking is the opportunity to learn from others. At eSAX, you’ll be surrounded by entrepreneurs at all stages of their journey, from those just starting out to seasoned professionals. Sharing knowledge about business strategies, marketing tips, and growth tactics can significantly shorten your learning curve and help your small business thrive.
  • Collaborate and Partner
Networking allows for the possibility of collaborations and partnerships that can propel your business forward. Whether it’s teaming up with a fellow entrepreneur to launch a new product or sharing resources with another startup, these connections can be invaluable. At eSAX, we specialize in connecting entrepreneurs and small business owners at networking events designed to inspire, educate, and promote collaboration.

  1. Ask the right questions

Successful networking isn’t just about promoting your business; it’s about building relationships and learning from others. When you approach someone at an Ottawa networking event, don’t just talk about yourself. Instead, ask questions about their business and interests.

Some great questions to ask at networking events include:

  • “What challenges are you facing in your business?”
  • “How did you get started as an entrepreneur in Ottawa?”
  • “What are some of your biggest challenges in business right now?”
  • “How can I help?”
  • “What resources have you found most helpful in growing your startup?”

Check out this short Ask the Fedora video on 4 great networking questions to ask.

Plus, asking better questions when networking will lead to more business.

Asking questions will show that you’re genuinely interested in their business and will foster a deeper connection.

  1. Focus on quality, not quantity

While it may be tempting to try to talk to as many people as possible at a networking event, the key to successful networking is quality connections over quantity. Instead of trying to meet everyone in the room, focus on building meaningful conversations with a few individuals who align with your business goals.

At eSAX events, we encourage participants to engage in meaningful one-on-one conversations, which often lead to lasting business relationships, partnerships, and collaborations.

  1. Be authentic and approachable

Networking is all about building genuine relationships. In order to connect with fellow entrepreneurs, it’s important to be authentic and approachable. Don’t try to be someone you’re not – people can tell when you’re being insincere. Be open, friendly, and transparent about your business journey and challenges.

  • Tip: Smile, make eye contact, and actively listen to what the other person has to say. These simple gestures will make you appear more approachable and trustworthy.

Check out this short Ask the Fedora video by eSAX founder Jarrod Goldsmith on the value of being genuine.

  1. Share your expertise

As an entrepreneur or small business owner, you likely have valuable insights and expertise that others can benefit from. Use networking events as an opportunity to share your knowledge and experience. By contributing to the conversation and offering helpful advice, you’ll establish yourself as a thought leader in the Ottawa business community.

  • Pro tip: If someone asks for advice or guidance, don’t be afraid to share your experience. This can lead to more in-depth discussions and new business opportunities. But remember to engage and ask questions!
  1. Follow up after the event

Networking doesn’t stop when the event ends. Follow-up is key to turning initial connections into long-lasting relationships. After an Ottawa networking event, send a personalized email or LinkedIn message to the people you connected with. In your message, remind them of what you discussed at the event, express your interest in continuing the conversation, and perhaps suggest a meeting to explore potential business opportunities.

Check out this short Ask the Fedora video about why it’s important to follow-up with everyone you meet at networking events, even if you know they may not be a client in the short-term.

  • Pro tip: Be sure to follow up within 24-48 hours after the event. A timely follow-up increases the chances of staying top-of-mind.
  • Pro tip: Attend regularly to stay connected to Ottawa’s thriving entrepreneurial community. At eSAX events, you’ll meet fellow business owners, investors, and mentors who are ready to help you succeed.

Before you attend a business networking event, it’s crucial to have a clear and concise elevator pitch ready. Your elevator pitch should succinctly describe who you are, what your business does, and why someone should be interested in connecting with you. Remember, people at entrepreneurial events are often busy, so make sure you can share your value proposition in less than 30 seconds.

  • Tip: Tailor your pitch to the event and specifically to the person you’re talking to. If you’re at a startup-focused event, highlight the growth potential of your business. If you’re at an event for small business owners, emphasize the sustainability and profitability of your business.
  • Tip: Perhaps you may wish to ditch the sales pitch completely! And sometimes it’s best to actually leave the sales pitch at home!

Perfect your elevator pitch using enthusiasm – By eSAX founder Jarrod Goldsmith

All entrepreneurs know about the thirty second elevator pitch. What is it? When you’re starting-out a business, you need to know what you do. If you’re not comfortable talking about it yet, write it out. Start going to events and start practicing it! You’ll be amazed at how much of what you say about your business will change over the next six month or a year. As an example, when Jarrod Goldsmith started Sax Appeal back in 2011, he began by writing-out everything he wanted to say. “Made-up of only saxophone players, Sax Appeal plays live jazz music, classical music and Christmas music around Ottawa for weddings, festivals and other events” It read like a sale’s-pitch and sounded terrible. People didn’t want to connect with him because all he was doing was initially reading-off a script. When he started changing the way he presented Sax Appeal, people really started to take notice.

He became much more engaging, mentioning that the groups plays all styles of music, and also started asking people if they’ve ever heard of a saxophone quartet, or even if they’ve played music themselves. Enthusiasm is always very important. Secondly, the more you talk about the business the easier it will become. No one knows your business as much as you do. When you’re enthusiastic and passionate about your startup, throw away the 30 second pitch and just do it. Connect with people in a way that doesn’t come across as a sales pitch. Easier said than done, but the beauty is that you can go out and practice since there must be many entrepreneur networking events in your area.

Happy networking everybody. See you at the next event. Because #eSAX makes networking work

If you’re an entrepreneur, a startup founder, a small business owner, or someone thinking about starting a business, attending business networking events in Ottawa is one of the most important things you can do for your growth. But what happens when you get to a networking event like eSAX (The Entrepreneur Social Advantage Experience)?

Knowing how to talk to someone at a networking function can make all the difference between awkward small talk and a powerful business connection. At eSAX networking events in Ottawa, we specialize in helping you feel confident and comfortable connecting with other professionals, mentors, and potential collaborators.

Here are 7 tips on how to talk to someone at a networking event

  1. Start with a confident introduction

Walk up to someone and say something simple like:

“Hi, I’m Rolo, I run a dog sitting business in Ottawa. What brings you to this event?”

The key is to make it about them. Entrepreneurs love to talk about what they’re working on – just like you!

  1. Ask open-ended questions

Here are some go-to networking questions to ask at an Ottawa entrepreneur event:

  • “Are you from Ottawa?”
  • “What’s your business all about?”
  • “How did you get started as a small business owner?”
  • “What kind of clients are you looking to connect with?”
  • “Have you been to an eSAX event before?”
  • “Do you know the organizer”
  • “Have you ever had pets?”

These kinds of questions show that you’re interested, while also revealing common ground. And can open the door to a much more personalized conversation. Remember…talking to people at networking events should not be all about business! You want to strive to create a genuine connection and friendship with someone.

Some favorite questions to ask people at networking events is anything but business. A lot of the time you’ll go up to somebody and know they are aching to give you their business card. Ask them how did they get to the event? Was there traffic? Where you stuck in traffic? What part of town did you come from? I see you’re wearing runners…do you run? Ask them anything outside of business to really get to know them. Some favorite questions to ask is if you’ve been to this event before; have you met the organizer; is there anyone here I can help introduce you to? Because this doesn’t come across as a sales pitch. When you go out of your way to really connect with somebody in a way to help them connect with other people, those are really good questions to ask.

  1. Listen more than you talk

At events like eSAX Ottawa networking meetups, the goal is connection…not pitching. Focus on learning about the other person, and resist the urge to dominate the conversation. Talking less, listening more. A great skill to learn for networking

  1. Have a clear elevator pitch

When it’s your turn to talk, have a 15–30 second explanation ready. Example:

“I run a small bookkeeping firm that helps Ottawa startups and entrepreneurs get their finances in order so they can focus on growing.” Practice it in advance so you can say it naturally, not like a script.

  1. Bring business cards (and use them wisely)

Always carry a few professional business cards to Ottawa business networking events like eSAX. Don’t just hand them out to everyone – only share after you’ve had a meaningful interaction.

  • Pro-tip: After meeting someone, take a moment to write some notes on the back of a card so you remember who that person was, and have something personalized to say to them when you follow-up.
  • Pro-tip: Check out this short Ask the Fedora video for how to get a business card.
  1. Find ways to help others

The best way to build trust is to be useful. Know a good web designer? Recommend them. Heard about an event perfect for a startup? Share it. At eSAX, we believe that giving value first is what real networking is all about.

  1. Follow up after the event

Networking doesn’t end when the event does. Send a personalized LinkedIn message or email the next day with something like this: “Great meeting you at the eSAX networking event in Ottawa last night! I enjoyed learning about your coaching business. Let’s grab a coffee sometime?”

Consistency builds relationships – and business opportunities.

If you’re an entrepreneur, startup founder, small business owner, or even just thinking about starting your own business in Ottawa, attending local networking events is one of the most powerful ways to grow your professional network. First impressions are everything – especially in the world of entrepreneur networking.

Here’s your comprehensive guide on how to make a strong first impression at any Ottawa business networking event, especially when attending one of eSAX’s signature functions.

  1. Dress the Part

First impressions start before you even say a word. Choose attire that reflects your brand and the image you want to project. Business casual is often the norm at Ottawa entrepreneur networking events, but always lean toward professional and polished.

  • Pro tip: At eSAX events, we recommend wearing branded apparel (yellow) or accessories with your logo to help others remember your business. Our founder Jarrod Goldsmith is known for his signature black fedora for example!
  1. Perfect Your Elevator Pitch

Be prepared to introduce yourself in 30 seconds or less. Your elevator pitch should include:

  • Your name and business
  • What product or service you offer
  • Who your ideal client is
  • What makes you different

Remember: clarity beats cleverness. At a busy Ottawa small business networking event, attention spans are short – make your message count.

  1. Bring Business Cards or a Digital Alternative

Even in the digital age, business cards are still widely used in professional networking events in Ottawa. Make sure your cards are up to date and include all relevant contact info. If you prefer a more modern approach, use a digital business card app or QR code to share your details.

  • Pro tip: Bring a pen to jot down notes on the back of cards you collect to remember your conversations. Check out this short Ask the Fedora video for how to be organized with your business cards. And this clip for some business card etiquette best practices.
  1. Be Curious and Ask Questions

Don’t just talk about yourself. Be genuinely interested in others. Ask open-ended questions like:

  • “What inspired you to start your business?”
  • “Who’s your ideal client?”
  • “What brought you to this event?”

Building relationships is key at networking functions for startups in Ottawa, and listening is one of the best tools you have.

  1. Follow Up After the Event

What you do after the networking event is just as important as what you do during. Send a quick follow-up message or connection request on LinkedIn. Mention something specific you talked about to jog their memory.

  • Pro tip: Always follow up within 24–48 hours to keep the connection warm.

Check out this short Ask the Fedora video for some thoughts on why it’s important to follow-up with everyone you meet at a networking function, even though you don’t think they will ever be a potential client.

  1. Be Consistent and Show Up Regularly

Building a strong professional network takes time and consistency. Attending regular Ottawa networking events for entrepreneurs – like those hosted by eSAX – helps you become a familiar face in the local business community.

From 2012 – 2020, eSAX has been hosting Ottawa’s premier entrepreneur networking events every three months. eSAX was originally conceived for 2 reasons:

1) To bring together all regional Chambers of Commerce in the Ottawa area. In 2012 there were five separate and completely independent Chambers of Commerce in Ottawa alone, consisting of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, Orleans Chamber of Commerce, Nepean Chamber of Commerce, Kanata Chamber of Commerce, and the le Regroupement des gens d’affaires de la capitale nationale. eSAX founder Jarrod Goldsmith quickly established himself as an ambassador for the Ottawa, Orleans, Nepean and Kanata Chambers of commerce, attending events all across the city. He wanted to encourage more collaboration among the business community because as a musician, it did not matter where in town a client had a gig. And likewise, there are no boundaries in business these days such that geographics should no longer apply. eSAX was created to encourage collaboration among the chambers and within all of their memberships.

As of 2018, most of the chambers of commerce in Ottawa amalgamated to form the Ottawa Board of Trade, with eSAX founder Jarrod Goldsmith still actively involved as an ambassador and who can frequently be found attending networking events across the city rocking his signature black fedora!

2) To offer an opportunity for startups enrolled in the provincially funded Ontario Self-Employment Benefit (OSEB) Program to create connections, gain knowledge from featured speakers and promote collaboration within the Ottawa’s business community. OSEB accepted dozens of aspiring entrepreneurs into the program every three months and were told to start networking to get business, but very few opportunities excited for startups. eSAX was created to encourage startups entering the OSEB program with recurring networking opportunities every three months.
