Ask the Fedora: How To Approach A Celebrity and/or An Influential Person At A Networking Event

This week on Ask the Fedora: How To Approach A Celebrity and/or An Influential Person At A Networking Event

Transcript:

When you go networking events, it’s almost a guarantee that at some point you may run-into some influential people. If, for example, the City Mayor is present and you wish to have a little chat about some city interests, it’s a good idea for you to at least have something to talk about. If you know that person is going to be attending, do a little background research in advance. Find some information about the person so that the two of you can relate so you’ll have at least a starting point to talk about things. As an example, I had the chance to chat with Arlene Dickenson from the Dragon’s Den not too long ago at an event. The first thing I said was ‘thank you so much for coming to Ottawa! Do you ever spend much time here?” We then proceeded to have a very nice short conversation about Ottawa. These were not ‘work-related’ questions. I was trying to at least begin an initial relationship. Plus, she knew that I was not trying to sell her anything….(which would have been an immediate ‘turn-off’). Try to ask general questions to get to know the person, rather than how can they help your business right now. Happy networking everybody. See you at the next event. More Tips To Remember Names At Networking Events

Today our #AskTheFedora offers more tips for remembering names at networking events.

Transcript:

To me, one of the most challenging things about networking is trying to remember everybody’s name. Because I wear a very distinctive hat, pretty much anybody I have ever met will remember me (plus I always wear a name tag so they even know my name)! But when I meet hundreds of people in-between meeting them for the second time, it’s a tough balance trying to remember everyone’s name. What I like to do is try to remember something specific about that person. Maybe they have the same kind of car as I do, or they grew up in the same city as I did so that I’m able to connect with them.

The Real Purpose of Networking

Do you ever wonder: what’s the point of networking? In this #AskTheFedora, Jarrod discusses the real purpose of networking!

So many people go to networking events and they think they need to get a client by the end of this week or they want to have five clients by the end of the month. To me, the purpose of networking is developing long term relationships. When I go to a networking event, I’m not expecting to get a gig right away (since very few people are looking to hire music such as Sax Appeal), so I’m trying to develop long-term connections with everyone.
